Custom-Built 141 Valves for SealGuard II

Check valve serves as critical safety component

A 300 degree, sticky glue-type substance exploding in your face is not an ideal day on the job.  The result would be third or fourth degree burns, charred skin, numerous surgeries, skin grafting, stacks of medical bills, and many other negative aspects.  However, this scenario is a serious potential risk for underground utility workers – until SealGuard, Inc. developed the SealGuard II using Smart Products’ custom built 141 check valve (based on our ½ inch flanged cartridge 14C valve) as a key safety feature.

SealGuardII
The SealGuard II is a highly reactive dual-component hydrophobic polyurethane water-stop system. It is used to repair leaks for manholes, slurry wall, basements, or anywhere underground.

“The SealGuard II is unique to the industry because the 141 valve provides a huge safety component for operators.  That’s why we’ve patented this particular valve with our product,” says Bill Hershman, CEO of SealGuard.  “Polyurethane is an incredibly sticky substance.  When you factor in that people are installing it at 300 degrees of heat, you want it to come out safely – otherwise it would be a very bad day at work.”

When injected, the SealGuard II’s chemical components react and expand up to 20 times, creating a foam seal within the cracks.  This process creates up to 300 degrees of heat and is installed at eye-level.  The 141 check valve plays a critical role because it keeps the polyurethane in the tube – otherwise there is a risk this dangerous chemical could spew out similar to a shaken soda.  In addition, because of the wide variety of body and O-ring materials, we can create material combinations that perform in some of the most demanding environments.

Eric Smith, President and founder of SealGuard comments, “Smart Products was responsive and willing to help us adopt the valve for our uses, none of the other options was willing to do that.”

Polypropylene - Our Standard Plastic for 26 years

Smart Products works with a wide variety of body materials - and polypropylene consistently remains winner of best all-around plastic

Polypropylene can be found in a wide variety of plastic products from chairs to toys, but it is especially valued by us as the go-to material for our check valves.  Why? Merits include:

polyprop-A wide spectrum of chemical resistivity
-Especially good with acidic acid
-Holds up against ware
-Works with gamma sterilization, ETO sterlization, and autoclaving
-Works at a maximum temperature of 180 degrees
-Affordable

In fact, approximately 75% of our check valves are created in polypropylene because it will work in most applications (appeals to engineers) and remains an economical choice (bonus for purchasers).  The versatility of this material makes it available in every series of our check valves to include cartridge, NPT, modular, and miniature.  We also have the capability to produce it in different colors for applications that call for color coding.

We use a glass-filled polypropylene because it gives the plastic more firmness and strength, which holds the shape of our valves.  It is also the best plastic to run through our injection molders because once the melting temperature is applied, the chemical makeup allows it to fill the molder’s cavities with ease, seal well, and have the least amount of fall out versus other plastics.

In addition to polypropylene, Smart Products also offers Nylon (natural), Nylon (black), Acrylic, polycarbonate, ABS, Acetal, PVDF, and Ultem in body materials for most of our valve products.

Based on your application requirements, we can build a custom-designed valve for you by first selecting one of our 8 body materials like polypropylene.   Once we select a plastic, O-rings, and pressure requirements, we can create test samples based on specific project criteria.  Call a Product & Application Specialist to get started today at (800) 338-0404.
