In-Line Check & Pressure Relief Valves
|
|
Compact and easily inserted into soft tubing, Series 100 Barbed Valves are an affordable flow control solution for applications varying from coffee makers to kidney dialysis machines and beyond.
Featured in the June edition of SmartTalk, the #101 Micro Barbed Valve is the smallest plastic check valve available on the market and fits 1/8” inner diameter (ID) tubing.
The #111 and its opposite, the #118, are slightly larger valves and insert into 1/4” ID tubing. The #118 is a reverse flow option from the #111.
All three Series 100 Barbed Valves are:
- used as a check or pressure relief valve
- available in a variety of body materials & O-rings
- have an opening pressure range from 2 to 20 PSI
- ideal for liquid or gas
When creating the latest and greatest invention, Series 100 Barbed Valves are a beneficial design consideration because they eliminate the need for extra components (i.e. clamps), which can mean design and production savings. Additionally, the design of barbed valves works especially well to eliminate leaks because the barbs grip inside soft tubing versus an external placement.

Empowering Empowermate to Help the Physically Challenged

Empowermate Systems, Inc. Develops Automated Showering System with Smart Products Liquid Valves & Pumps
|
|
Taking a shower is an easy part of most daily routines, but can be a challenge for people with physical impairments. Tasks ranging from being able to stand in the shower to shampooing hair are seemingly impossible without hands-on assistance, shower modifications, or technological devices.
Empowermate Systems, Inc. strives to solve this dilemma with their recently created automated showering system, soon to enter the marketplace. This system allows physically challenged individuals to remain seated while being able to wash from head to toe, as well as front to back. Users will gain greater independence because they can use the system with little or no assistance.
Smart Products has worked closely with Empowermate Systems over the past year by identifying their flow control needs, supplying pumps and valves, and assisting them throughout the project’s duration.
“Empowermate Systems produces automated technologies to improve the lives of the physically challenged and enable an independent lifestyle. Our trademark is ‘automated systems for independent living.’ We went with Smart Products for our needs because of good performance, cost-effective price, and very professional customer service,” says William Shrewsbury, President of Empowermate System, Inc.
The system requires two SP2210 Liquid Pumps (pictured right in the Empowermate test lab) to dispense shampoo and body wash. Additionally, two 214/214 check valves are used with the pumps to prevent back flow into the dispense lines.
“Empowermate has a strong desire to help the physically challenged population improve their quality of life. Working directly with William Shrewsbury, President of Empowermate Systems, allowed us to share and act on detailed project specifications, and he was open to Smart Products’ suggestions. I’m especially proud that our collaborations will soon benefit others,” says Product & Application Specialist Marissa Bond.

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene)
|
|
Ideal for Really Cold Environments
|
|
With a minimum effective temperature of -4°F (-20°C), ABS is an ideal body material for applications exposed to really cold environments. In addition, this plastic will also work well up to 176°F (80°C) and at a melting point of 221°F (105°C).
ABS has excellent resistance properties and works well with:
-
glycerine
-
inorganic salts
-
alkalis
-
many acids
-
most alcohols
-
hydrocarbons
ABS is only recommended for short term use with weak acids, and it is not a good choice for strong acids and solvents, ketones, aldehydes, esters, and some chlorinated hydrocarbons. A Product & Application Specialist can determine if ABS is an ideal choice for specific liquids or gases used in your device.
For customers who require gamma radiation, we tested ABS for this type of exposure, and it received an “A grading,” which means it had no visual or functional changes (click here for full test results on other plastic body materials). However, note that ABS cannot be autoclaved and has a low UV resistance.
For questions or to further explore any of our eight plastic body materials – Acrylic, Nylon (natural and black), Polycarbonate, Polypropylene, ABS, Acetal, PVDF, and Ultem – call us at (800) 338-0404.
