The global shortage of PVDF (Kynar) has affected many companies as they manufacture products today and plan for 2012. Smart Products has two grades of PVDF in-house in quantities sufficient to last through the coming year.

Customers have asked what prepcipitated the shortage.

According to Industrial Plastics Supply, Inc.:

PVDF is known for its incredible resistance to harsh chemicals, and it can be used in a wide range of fluid control products for chemical use.

While chemical resistance is one of the key properties of PVDF, another advantage to this material is its natural resistance to UV light– direct sunlight. As such, one of the many applications of this material is the white roof coatings put on industrial buildings. This premium spray-on roof coating, made by Arkema is called Aquatec®, and it lasts for decades.  This coating is energy-efficient and highly reflective of heat.

The demand for the roof coatings, coupled with the already growing chemical resistance market, has made the demand for resin skyrocket globally. The manufacturers of the resin have most, if not all of their customers, on allocation for it – making the supply chain dry up instantly.

Smart Products has two sources of PVDF.  Hylar 9009 is currently in-stock, and it is FDA approved to 21 CFR 177.2510, which means it is approved for use in contact with food.  We are in the process of testing Kynar 710, and production stock should be available in December.  This type of PVDF is NSF 61 approved, which means it meets potable (drinking) water requirements for the control of potential adverse human health effects from products that contact drinking water.

For spec sheet comparisons of each type of PVDF or other questions, contact a Product & Application Specialist at (800) 338-0404 or email sales@smartproducts.com.
